Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from class?

Music Together Babies Class is designed for children ages birth through kindergarten. At Music Together we believe that music ability is as much a basic life skill as walking and talking, and that all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with pleasure and confidence in the music of their culture. Music Together classes nurture your child’s natural enthusiasm for music and movement as we sing, dance, chant, and play instruments in an informal setting. Our relaxed environment that will enrich her musical environment and guides your child her towards a lifetime of music-making enjoyment. Parents or caretakers also benefit from parent education interspersed throughout the class.
We open each class with our “Hello” song, and we welcome each child by name. Throughout the class, your instructor will use the rich Music Together curriculum to guide your child through a musical experience, which is different from week to week. Most classes make time for a “jam” and/or “free dance” song, allowing your child to explore music making and movement in his or her own way. Each class closes with a lullaby and our “Goodbye” song, which again calls each child by name.

Why are most classes taught in a Mixed Age setting?

Music Together is designed for children age birth through kindergarten. In the 1980s, Music Together pioneered the development of the mixed-age approach in early childhood music. In each class we strive to create a musically rich, developmentally appropriate environment where the whole family can enjoy music and nurture skills at the level right for each child.
Mixed-age classes provide a rich learning environment because children of different ages thrive when they interact with each other: the babies are often fascinated by the older children, and the “big” children enjoy helping and sharing with the “little” ones. This approach is based on research from music education, early childhood development, and family relationships, as well as our 20 years of experience in the field.

What is the class size?

Each class has 8 - 16 registered children plus their primary caregiver(s).

What if I miss a class during the term? How do I schedule a make up?
Families are allowed unlimited makeups each semester, though they do not roll over to the next semester.  All makeups must be scheduled through our website after the semester begins. If you have more than one child, you only need to fill out the online form once. In order to keep class sizes small, drop-ins are not permitted.
To schedule or cancel a makeup class, please scroll to the top of this page and click on “Make-Ups.”

Class Policies:
Here is a list of class policies designed to keep our classes running smoothly and focused on making music!

PARTICIPATION: In this class it is very important for the adults to participate! The children learn their attitudes and motivations from you, and you can help them become enthusiastic music-makers just by enjoying the class and participating fully. You will be an excellent model regardless of your musical ability —a sense of fun is all that is required.

YOUR CHILD: Children have the amazing ability to teach themselves through play, and even the most well-meaning adult can disrupt that process by giving too much direction. Allow your child to experience the class in his or her own unique way… whether it’s by moving constantly, sitting and staring, tasting the instruments rather than playing them, etc. We know from working with hundreds of children over the years that each child is busily processing the musical information, even if it is not apparent during class activities. Trust this process, relax, and let your child be, and you will begin to see new musical behaviors emerging as the semester progresses.

TIMELINESS: Class begins and ends on time, and it is important for you to be prompt. It is often difficult for a child to enter a class already in session. Please make a point to be here for the Hello Song, so your child feels properly welcomed.

FOOD & TOYS: We prefer to keep our 45 minutes together as musical as possible. We request that you leave toys at home so your child can focus on the class. Please feel comfortable to nurse or bottle feed your baby in class, but we ask that you limit food or drink in the classrooms. Drinks can be kept in your bag for a "quick sip" if necessary. If your child needs a snack, please take them outside the circle to avoid inspiring other young snackers. Please be courteous to keep the room clean.

GUESTS: There is never a charge for visiting adults! Unregistered siblings or visiting children may accompany your registered child once free of charge; thereafter there is a 15€ guest fee. Please contact us prior to bringing another child to class. Due to the class size restrictions, we can only allow other children if we know another registered child will be absent on that date. We have a few exceptions to the guest policy. Anytime we have classes, and siblings of registered children (that is, preschoolers through age 5) are out of school due to a holiday or a teacher workday, they are welcome to join you and your registered child in our Music Together® class.  Older siblings are welcome to come on any Fairfax County teacher work day. In the Spring semester, preschool aged siblings are welcome to come with their registered sibling once their preschool ends.
